Report of the 2008 International
AIDS Candlelight Memorial in Owerri, Imo State.
With the support of the Tenth April Group (Nig.) Ltd and the Imo State
Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, the African Youth
Development Foundation (AFRYDEF) organized the observance of the 2008
International AIDS Candlelight Memorial on May 18, 2008 at the Family Support
Programme Park,
Wetheral Road,
Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria.
The event, which was kicked off with free HIV/AIDS testing exercises and
campaigns featured key note speeches and brief remarks from youth activists
and student leaders from the various universities and colleges in the state.
The special message from the Managing Director /CEO of Tenth April Group,
Chief Ossy Oparaugo, the sponsor of the year’s event was read to the
participants by Hon. Remy Chukwunyere, the Executive Director of AFRYDEF.
The high point
of the event was a street rally and road walk, which participants used to
demonstrate their love, care and support for all persons living with
HIV/AIDS.
